The Open Source UnPlug extension works on most of the well-known websites which have embedded video, audio, and Flash games. That includes core sites like YouTube, Metacafe, and Vimeo. Here’s the complete list of supported websites.
Plugging into UnPlug
As soon as the extension installs, the Settings dialog is displayed. You can work through the four tabs to setup UnPlug for the video downloading that’s about to follow.Here’s a little primer… You can opt-in to allow the extension to collect information on the sites you use UnPlug on for development purposes. For the sake of privacy it is switched off by default. Integration gives you four options to access UnPlug. You can deselect one or two to keep things less crowded. For instance, I like to keep my right-click menu uncluttered. Media Discovery shows you the location of the Rules file and an option to display a record of downloads which do not work. Downloads is where you configure the way the extension will process the media downloads. You can also set up supported downloading extensions that Unplug works with like DownloadThemAll and FlashGot. An external tool like VLC can also be set up.
Grabbing a Video With UnPlug
Unplug is now configured to handle video downloads as we hop and skip through websites. When you come across a potential video to download, you can use any of the preferred methods you had set up. For instance: clicking on Tools –> UnPlug or quickly using the right-click context menu anywhere on the page apart from the video player. UnPlug gives you a list of quality formats to choose from. The download time and file-size will of course, depend on the choice you go for. You can also go for multiple quality formats. Select your download location and rename the file if you want.
