Google knows there’s a segment out there that needs a bit of hand holding. Good To Know is a Google initiative that teaches greenhorn computer users all about the dos and don’ts of online safety. Good To Know is very much like those public service campaigns we see on popular media these days. But more than them, things like ‘setting unique passwords’ or ‘how to use Google SafeSearch’ impact the way we use our computers every day.
As the Google Public Policy blog says – “The new Good to Know website builds on this commitment to explaining things in simple language. The in-depth resources are still there, but we hope a one-stop-shop resource will make this information more accessible for everyone.” True to their word, Good To Know is beautifully organized into four broad areas (visible horizontally on top) – Stay safe online, Your data on the web, Your data on Google, and Manage your data. Each area again has sections which address specific best practices. You can see the sub-topics on arranged on top to down on the left.
The new Good To Know uses simple language and neat caricatures to explain some of the rules you should always follow to stay safe online. You also have a fair sprinkling of videos that illustrate the best practices of online safety. And if you stumble over a word that sounds Greek to you, head over to the Jargon Buster for a quick explanation. Google’s Good To Know isn’t about Google alone but the entire way we use our computers. Just so, when you speak about 5 Fantastic Resources to Help Your Mom Get Familiar With Internet don’t forget to add Good To Know to the list.
